Kevin Backer was born in Shreveport, Louisiana in 1961, the first born of Thomas and Sharon Backer. When Kevin was eleven his father passed after many years fighting cancer. Spending his whole childhood in Shreveport, he was raised by his mother and grandparents, who helped raise both Kevin and his younger brother.
Attending college at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Kevin studied there for three years before returning home to Shreveport to help with the care of his grandmother. After two years, he moved to the Dallas area. There he met his partner and now husband Joey. The two have been together for over twenty-four years, living north of Dallas close to their son and his partner.
